CUORE

Early in 2008, PSL began the design of a detector calibration system (DCS) for the Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) in Italy, with UW-Madison Associate Professor Karsten Heeger and others of the UW-Madison Physics Department. CUORE is a rare event experiment to search for the yet unobserved neutrinoless double beta decay. Observation of this nuclear decay would demonstrate that neutrinos are their own antiparticles and revolutionize the Standard Model of Particle Physics. PSL is helping to develop a unique detector calibration system that will perform radioactive calibrations of the bolometers used in the experiment at cryogenic temperatures inside a dilution refrigerator.
