The business office of the Kegonsa Research Campus serves three units; namely, the Physical Sciences Laboratory(PSL), the Synchrotron Radiation Center (SRC) and its users, and the IceCube Research Center (IRC).

Mark Faber, Assistant Director of the Shared Administration group, oversees all business functions including the supervision of Ruth Drage, Business Office Coordinator; Karen Aune, Personnel Manager, and Jon Young, IT Manager.

Ruth Drage recently assumed supervisory duties of employees in the KRC accounting and purchasing departments and the IRC accounting office. She has a long history with the shared administration group having transferred from the UW-Whitewater in 1989. Ruth also is an accountant for PSL, SRC and IRC. She likes being able to help people resolve their problems and providing them with the information they need.

Mary Mason is part of the accounting team. She handles SRC accounting which includes auditing invoices and balancing multiple state and federal funds each month. Mary also applies the correct funding codes for all purchasing card users and audits invoices for IRC accounts. She uses a variety of software to balance and maintain accounting and payroll data. She also processes both classified and unclassified payrolls for PSL and SRC staff along with maintaining leave accounting records. Mary enjoys quilting in the winter and gardening in the warm months.

In April 2006, Michelle Kirch transferred from the Synchrotron Radiation Center to become part of the business office. She currently performs various accounting tasks for PSL and IceCube and sets up new staff with telephone numbers and access codes. Michelle likes the variety of work her present position gives her. She enjoys spending time with family and friends when not at work.

Team leader for purchasing and stockroom activities has been Kathy Jaglin’s job since April 2001. Kathy transferred from the Southern Wisconsin Center in Union Grove. She spends the majority of her day purchasing products and services for PSL, SRC, and IRC. Kathy appreciates the skilled people she works with and likes the variety her work affords. Although trying to prioritize everyone’s requests to get products on time and acquiring the best possible products at the best prices does challenge her at times. Kathy recently became a Certified Massage Therapist and opened her own business. She also finds time to be involved with a local theater group and a garden club.

In April 2006 Jim Breitzman transferred from the UW-Madison Space Astronomy Lab to the business office as a Purchasing Associate. Jim enjoys working with staff in helping them find the materials and parts needed to complete their projects. He enjoys watching his daughter participating in basketball, tennis, and figure skating.

Jeff Jones started in the PSL stockroom and KRC shipping and receiving area in July 2007. He had worked for several years at the UW-Madison SWAP. Jeff likes his job because there is always something different to challenge him. Depending on where an item is being sent he has to make sure it is adequately insured and packed with the best protection available. Jeff is a member of a fraternal organization, Odd Fellows, which promotes doing your best to elevate all of mankind by helping those in distress; this keeps him very busy. He also enjoys hunting when he has the time. Jeff has been married to Phyllis for 23 years and has three children Erin, Alexander and Anastasia, and one grandson, William.

In 1996 Tim Sandlin joined the shared administration group as the campus courier delivering and picking up campus mail and maintaining KRC vehicles. He sometimes is asked to drop off or pick up materials needed by project personnel. This usually means finding rooms or laboratories in various nooks and crannies of the Madison campus. Tim had previously worked at UW Housing in Madison.

Karen Aune started as Personnel Manager on August 28, 2008 after 8 years with Recreational Sports on the Madison campus. Her day is filled with planning human resources for both PSL and SRC, salary budget, staffing, payroll and benefits administration, employee assessment and development, employee relations, effort certification plus policy development and implementation. Karen has jumped right in becoming involved with the PSL and SRC Equity & Diversity Committees, and representing PSL on the Graduate School Equity & Diversity Committee. Raised in Chicago, IL, Karen spent summers on Leech Lake in northern Minnesota. She moved to Madison in 1992 and is married with two young sons. Karen enjoys listening to jazz, biking, hiking, spending time outdoors, artsy stuff, and playing with her children.

Jon Young, IT Manager for the shared administration group, is still getting his feet wet, having started in August 2008. Jon keeps the computers humming along for the folks and is backup for PSL and SRC IT staff. This includes helping his co-workers with computer issues, as well as managing the PCs, servers and applications. Most critical among those is Masterpiece, the software used to run the accounting functions for PSL, SRC and IRC. Prior to joining the University, Jon spent 22 years with USG Corporation, serving stints as Project Leader of Technical Writing at the Chicago headquarters and as Network Administrator at a manufacturing tile plant in Cloquet, MN. Jon is married and has two children, one of whom will attend UW-Madison in the fall. Having moved to Madison from Duluth MN, Jon says to quit pitying yourselves about the cold snowy winter, but forget he said so when summer’s heat and humidity comes roaring in.
