Fall 2008

  • PSL made several permeameters, consolidometers and other soil testing assemblies for UW Professor Craig Benson’s lab in Civil and Environmental Engineering.

  • Kim Tan at the Canadian Light Source requested fabrication of stainless steel shims and OFHC rounds.

  • When IceCube researcher Jim Green found out another source could not provide a finished product, he asked PSL to fabricate the required fixtures and core barrel.

  • The Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL), is an initiative of the NSF to develop laboratory facilities on three levels in an abandoned gold mine at Homestake, SD. PSL has proposed a coordinated study of photomultiplier tubes (PMTs).

  • Dr. Fred Wightman of the University of Louisville has asked PSL to develop and build a speaker positioning system.

  • The PSL website has a new look.

  • A Creative Group

It has been well over 10 years since the fabrication shop was featured in our newsletter. Long enough that there are several new faces among the original group.

  • PSL Has a New Director

Graduate School Dean Martin Cadwallader selected Farshid Feyzi from several applicants to be PSL director. Farshid assumed the position on September 15, 2008.

  • A Note from Dave Huber

A personal message from retired PSL Director Dave Huber.

  • Progress with Daya Bay

The Daya Bay experiment is being constructed by a collaboration of scientists from the United States, the Republic of China, and Europe. The experiment will measure how anti-neutrinos change from one flavor to another (electron neutrinos into muon or tau neutrinos).

  • DCS for CUORE

Early in 2008, PSL mechanical engineer Ken Kriesel and CAD specialist Glen Gregerson began design of a detector calibration system (DCS) for the Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) with Assistant Professor Karsten Heeger and others of the UW-Madison Physics Department.
