Lee’s areas of expertise include:

  • Structural, magnetic, thermal and applied mathematical analysis
  • Structural, thermal and magnetic analysis using ANSYS® finite element package
  • Dynamics and vibration from Ph.D. work in engineering mechanics (a field that focuses on the theoretical underpinnings of mechanical engineering) with a minor in mathematics
  • Problems involving complex geometry

In his current position at PSL Lee has used these skills to:

  • Perform a system analysis of a hot water drilling process in Antarctic ice to find the relationship among drilling rates, hole diameter, conductive heat loss to the ice and the temperature and flow rate of the hot water
  • Provide the magnetic and structural analysis and the mechanical design for new steel and coils for a 200-ton, high-precision electron synchrotron accelerator. This was for NIST (the National Institute of Standards and Technology). Lee was also closely involved with the actual assembly and construction of the magnet.
  • Provide some of the design and structural analysis work that PSL has done on the 2300-ton steel end caps for the CMS detector at CERN.
  • Provide the magnetic analysis and design of a uniform field electromagnet used on the HERA ring in Hamburg, Germany.
  • Design a rotating, on board, water to air heat exchange system, closely temperature regulated, for an experimental cancer treatment device.
  • Provide the mechanical design for a low-power consumption rainwater-sampling device with an adjustable timing mechanism to allow intermittent sampling of surface water runoff throughout a storm. This device has a U.S. patent.
  • Carry out other finite element analyses.
