Mechanical Engineering and Design
The mechanical engineering and drafting group at PSL is experienced in
design and construction of equipment for a wide variety of projects,
ranging from simple to complex and multifunctional scientific instruments
with precise mechanisms and demanding design requirements. Areas of
expertise include ultra-high vacuum, cryogenics, high and low temperature
operation, high or low magnetic properties, precise magnetic fields, high
speed, high strength, extreme dimensional stability, non-lubricated
moving parts, high radiation environments, radiation shielding or transparency,
and similarly demanding features. PSL's mechanical engineers are
experienced in design and analysis using finite element analysis (FEA) techniques and adaptive design.
The drafting group at PSL has extensive experience in design and
integration of complex systems. The drafting group
uses the latest computer aided design (CAD) technology including
solid modeling. PSL has both Autodesk Mechanical Desktop ® and Solidworks ® modelers.
The drawings produced by the drafting group are
of the highest quality and accuracy. PSL takes particular care in
documenting and archiving all project design details.
In the photo below, a PSL-developed retrofit for a commercial MRI machine is shown.
Specifications included no use of metal, and support of patients up to 300 lbs (136 kg).
