Dan Wenman
PSL Mechanical Engineer

Masters in Business Administration, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Marquette University
Licensed Professional Engineer (Wisconsin)

Dan's areas of expertise include:

  • Providing sound solutions for challenging motion control applications using AC drives, DC drives, stepper motors, clutches, brakes, feedback sensors, encoders, and controls
  • Modeling complex 3-D assemblies using AutoCad and Mechanical Desktop
  • Analyzing and designing fast response pneumatically driven mechanisms
  • Computer software and systems (AutoCad, ANSYS, MathCad)

Dan has used his skills and expertise in:

  • Designing a variety of mechanical components for use on the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) Detector under construction at the European organization for nuclear research (CERN).
  • Integrating the complex network of gas, cooling, and electrical services with the hardware in the CMS detector.
  • Providing engineering analysis and design work for a prototype gantry for a new radiation therapy concept. This included stress and deflection analyses for the gantry structure.
  • Developing a fast response, high resolution multi-leaf collimator and the design of an adjustable beam-width primary collimator
  • Performing stress and deflection analyses for the calorimeter chambers and for detector chamber supports
  • Designing an adjustable speed feed mechanism for high volume milling of the detector electrodes
  • Analyze and design a variety of permanent magnet and electro-magnetic devices
  • Clutch and brake designing using a wide range of friction and non-friction technologies

In his current PSL position Dan uses his specialized skills to:

  • Perform stress and deflection analysis using finite element analysis
  • Draw two-dimensional layouts and three-dimensional models
  • Perform analysis in magnetics, heat transfer, stress, deflection and mechanical system dynamics
